I stepped up before the microphones outside the state capitol. All the local reporters were here. George Markins, Tina Kathe from the Friendly Herald, Brian Veras from the Nebraska Times, plus all the local affiliates of ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS had gathered. The cameras were rolling.

I just had to throw my wife under the bus to save myself. It felt so wrong. I gripped the podium. I stared out at the press. Missy was in the sidelines. Taylor was, too. She would come out to give her own statement about our divorce. It would be nasty, played out for the reporters. Full of all the sleaze they would love to report.

They would get clicks and views. People would watch their reporting and read their articles. Everyone would be gossiping about us. I hated it. I didn't want my wife to have to do this. I didn't want to destroy our marriage.

I wouldn't.

“You have all seen the video of Ronald Fillmore, his daughter, and myself,” I said, “but do you know the context? Missy is my mistress. My lover. I enjoy her company. Her father came to me to lobby for the changes to the regulations. He brought his daughter because she wanted to meet me. She had a crush on me like many young women do. Sparks flared. That taste of love filled the air. You've seen how salacious it grew.

“That's just what happens around me. I have encounters like that all the time. They've been reported about many times. My affair with the coach of the Cornhusker's wife. Or my dalliance with Mayor Nancy Murphy. My wife and I were both smitten with Missy. You may have noticed that Missy and I have been seen around town. She's my mistress.

“I would marry her if I could. If bigamy were legal, I would make her my second wife. Taylor and I both adore her.”

I could see my wife's frown out of the corner of my eye. The confusion.

“In fact, Missy just found out she's pregnant with our child,” I said. “But none of that has to do with the bill that I helped write. AgroBiz, Ronald's company, is just one of many local farms that will benefit from the loosening of some over-zealous regulations. Regulations sponsored by Monsanto to drive away their local competition.

“I wasn't taking a bribe. I was hearing from a concerned citizen about how one of those nasty international corporations who don't care about the little guy but their profit margins. Monsanto was using the State of Nebraska to squeeze out a few extra pennies. It was a stifling of free trade, and I helped undo it. Nebraska will prosper for it. And in the process, I met someone I have come to care for.”

I held out my hand, motioning to Taylor and Missy. My wife came out reluctantly while Missy flowed to me. I pulled them both to me, letting the cameras see us together. My new family. I had vowed to never be ashamed of my futa sexuality.
